A short interview with Amy Shapiro, MD - Pediatric Hematologist

What do you like about IHTC and its approach to care?

Each day, I’m impressed by every IHTC staff member’s efforts to deliver the best care to every person we serve. Every member of our team works together to achieve the best outcome and help meet everyone’s needs both at the center and within their community. Our care incorporates many different disciplines who all work together as a team every day to help patients and families.

How would you describe your approach to patient care?

My personal approach to care is mirrored by our extended team members. It’s personally important to me to help resolve every patient’s barrier to achieve the best outcome regardless of the problem or how difficult it may seem to identify a solution. I believe that problems are issues to be solved and should not be barriers to care.

What inspires you about your work?

I’m inspired by our ability to touch and positively change each person’s and family’s lives affected by the rare disorders we treat. I’m inspired to see our center implement the most advanced and cutting edge therapies and evaluations to improve each person’s outcome and quality of life and by seeing generations of patients and families impacted by our care and providers.

What do you hope to accomplish for patients?

I hope that our patients and families know that we are always here to help them and to provide the best possible care. I hope that every person and family affected with the rare disorders we treat will lead a better and more fulfilled life due to our efforts. I hope that in every generation we are able to improve outcomes so that children will grow to adults and that adults will lead full long lives unencumbered by a diagnosis.
